A Short Tutorial for the Origins Demo
=====================================
This file contains a short lesson to give you a feel for working with
Origins. The exercise is organized into a sequence of steps to follow during
a single session. These steps will describe what functions to invoke, as
well as what you will see on the screen. To take full advantage of the
tutorial and learn about Origins' features, you should execute each step
completely.
All steps that you should perform will be indicated by an asterisk at the
beginning of the line.
Start Origins
Start the Origins program.
When Origins is run, it will open the GenFile, Person file, Ordinance file,
and Marriage file. The GenFile is the configuration file. The Person file
is a collection of records, each describing a Person, with links to other
records, describing other people related to that Person. The Ordinance file
is a collection of records linked to the Person file. Each record in the
Ordinance file describes extra details of the person such as baptism,
confirmation, immigration dates, occupation, etc. The Marriage file is also
a collection of records linked to the person file. Each record in the
Marriage file describes details of a wedding such as date, location, etc.
The Person file and the Ordinance file provided with the Origins Demo contain
100 initial records, all blank, for your immediate use. The Marriage file
contains 50 blank records. Each record may contain information about 1
person, 1 baptism, etc., or 1 marriage. In the demo version of Origins,
these files are of fixed length, and may not be expanded.
To avoid cluttering up this section with <Your Name Goes Here>, we'll use a
fictitious family made up of 6 individuals for our examples. They are
listed below. Feel free to enter your own family instead as you go through
the tutorial with us.
The Son: Robert Smith
Birth date: 07 Jan 1947
Birth place: Orange, Orange, CA, USA
The Daughter: Julia Smith
Birth date: 02 Nov 1951
Birth place: Anaheim, Orange, CA, USA
The Father: Harold Burnett Smith
Birth date: 15 May 1916
The Mother: Sarah Jean Mayfield
Birth date: 03 Jun 1915
Birth place: VA, USA
Married: 15 Jun 1938, Norfolk, VA
The Grandfather: Harold Edward Smythe
Birth date: 23 Aug 1881
Birth place: Blackburn, Lancashire, no state, England
Death date: c.1943
The Grandmother: Margaret Reade Elston
Birth date: c.1884
Married: 26 Sep 1902
The first thing you will want to do is enter information into the data base.
After each entry, remember to press RETURN. This tells Origins that you
entered some data, and moves the cursor to the next field.
* Select "UPDATE/Persons File:" from the menu. You'll see the Update Person
Requester.
Simply hit RETURN to enter the '0' you see in the string gadget, and you'll
see a Person entry screen. We'll begin by entering the son.
Make sure the cursor is in the Surname field. If it's not, use the ENTER key
or a mouse click to put the entry cursor on the Surname field. Finding the
invisible string gadgets may be unfamiliar at first, but will become easier
if you remember that there is descriptive text before each one, and all the
gadgets are left justified in a column. After you become used to them, we
hope you'll appreciate the clean, uncluttered display.
* Enter "SMITH" in the Surname field. Remember to press RETURN.
Upper case is used by genealogists to emphasize the surname; you may choose
to do this or not. It's not enforced by Origins.
* Enter "Robert" in Given Names field.
* Enter "m" in the Gender field. Case doesn't matter.
* Press RETURN in the Code field. You can make up your own codes later.
* Move the cursor to the Person's Birth date field. Enter "07 Jan 1947".
* Enter "Orange" in the Person's Birth City field.
* Enter "Orange" in the Person's Birth County field.
* Enter "CA" in the Person's Birth State field.
* Enter "USA" in the Person's Birth Country field.
* We are finished entering this Person. Click on the SAVE gadget.
After the disk activity is over, you will get a requester that says:
"Person record has been saved. Update Ordinance record now?"
* This requester appeared because a User Preferences switch named AutoOrd
(Automatic Ordinance) defaults to ON when the program is used for the first
time. We don't have any Ordinance information for this Person, so just
click on Cancel.
* We will now enter the daughter. Click on the NEXT gadget. You'll get a
requester that says:
"Record does not exist. Want 1st blank record?"
* Since we have only entered one record, there is no record #2. Click on OK
to get the 1st blank record. Make sure the cursor is in the Surname field.
* Enter "SMITH" in the Surname field.
* Enter "Julia" in Given Names field.
* Enter "f" in the Gender field.
* Press RETURN in the Code field.
You'll see "-3" in the Father's Record # field. The negative number
indicates that this is a blank record; the value indicates that this is
record #3.
* Press RETURN in the Father's Record # field. Don't worry that the number
stays negative.
* Enter "SMITH" in the Father's Surname field.
* Enter "Harold Burnett" in the Father's Given Names field.
* Enter "15 May 1916" in the Father's Birth date field.
You'll see "-4" in the Mother's Record # field. This indicates that this is
record #4 and it is blank.
* Press RETURN in the Mother's Record # field. Don't worry that the number
stays negative.
* Enter "MAYFIELD" in the Mother's Surname field.
* Enter "Sarah Jean" in the Mother's Given Names field.
* Enter "03 Jun 1915" in the Mother's Birth date field. Notice that the
cursor moves to upper right part of screen when you press RETURN.
* Enter "02 Nov 1951" in the Person's Birth date field.
* Enter "Anaheim" in the Person's Birth City field.
* Enter "Orange" in the Person's Birth County field.
* Enter "CA" in the Person's Birth State field.
* Enter "USA" in the Person's Birth Country field.
* We have finished entering this Person. Click on the SAVE gadget, and
cancel the Ordinance requester.
Do not make a note of the mother's and father's record numbers at this time.
Although in this case the record numbers remain valid, they don't in all
circumstances.
Now we are going to enter more information on the father and mother. We
could get there by using the SPECIFY gadget, but in this case, since we were
already at the first blank record number, it's even easier to click on the
NEXT gadget, and continue dealing with records in order.
* Click on the NEXT gadget. You'll see the Father's entry screen, with name,
gender, and birth date already filled in. Origins automatically created
this record for you when you saved Julia's record.
* Use the ENTER key or a mouse click to put the entry cursor in the Person's
Father's Surname field (not the Person's Surname field). Here we are
entering the father's father, or grandfather, and father's mother, or
grandmother. Enter the following data in order:
Person's Father's Surname field: "SMYTHE"
Person's Father's Given Names field: "Harold Edward"
Person's Father's Birth date field: "23 Aug 1881"
Press RETURN to accept the next blank record number.
Person's Mother's Surname field: "ELSTON"
Person's Mother's Given Names field: "Margaret Reade"
Person's Mother's Birth date field: "c.1884"
* As before, click on the SAVE gadget, cancel the Ordinance requester, then
click on the NEXT gadget. Now you'll see Sarah MAYFIELD's entry screen.
Use the mouse pointer to click on the Birth state field, and enter the
following data in order:
Person's Birth state: "VA"
Person's Birth country: "USA"
* Once again, click on the SAVE gadget, cancel the Ordinance requester, then
click on the NEXT gadget. Now you'll see the entry screen of Harold Edward
SMYTHE, the grandfather. Click on the Birth city field, and enter the
following data in order:
Person's Birth city: "Blackburn"
Person's Birth county: "Lancashire"
Person's Birth state: Press RETURN (no state)
Person's Birth country: "England"
Person's Death date: "c.1943"
* Click on the SAVE gadget, but this time, at the Ordinance requester, click
on OK. Now you'll see an Ordinance data entry screen.
* Position the cursor by clicking on the Immigration Details: Arrival field,
and enter the following data in order:
Arrival: "Ellis Island, New York"
Date: "12 Mar 1901"
Occupation: "carpenter"
* Click on the SAVE gadget. Notice that we were returned to the Update
Person screen.
We have now described all the Persons in the Smith family, but we have one
more thing to do before going on; we need to describe the relationship
between Robert Smith (the first record we entered), and his parents.
* Click on the SPECIFY gadget, and enter "1" in the requester. You'll see
Robert Smith's Person record.
* Place the cursor in the Person's Father's record # field. Hold down the
right-Amiga key and press the "X" key to erase this field. Then enter the
record number of Robert's father, "3". You will see the name Harold
Burnett Smith appear on the lines below.
* Place the cursor in the Person's Mother's record # field. Hold down the
right-Amiga key and press the "X" key to erase this field. Then enter the
record number of Robert's mother, "4". You will see the name Sarah Jean
MAYFIELD appear on the lines below.
* We are through with this record. Click on the SAVE gadget and cancel the
Ordinance requester.
Persons are only referenced by number, never by name. This is because record
numbers are always unique, but Persons may share the same name, birth date,
etc. Because of this you will want to have the list of Persons that have
been previously entered handy when adding new Persons, Ordinances, Marriages,
etc. This can be easily done in two ways, depending upon your style. Either
print the Person (Marriage, Parent/Child) List on paper and refer to it while
entering data, or direct the output of the list functions to a file, and let
multi-tasking work for you, by loading the file in your favorite editor and
flipping screens to access the lists.
In this tutorial we will generate a list of persons (the Smith family) by
printing it out on paper.
* Click on the QUIT gadget to exit the Update Person screen. Select "List/
Person's Records:" from the menu. You will see a the List Requester.
* Click on the PRINTER gadget, and then the OK gadget. You'll get a
requester asking if the printer is ready. When it is, click on OK.
Now that you have a list of the 6 Persons in the Smith family, we will enter
two marriages.
* Select "UPDATE/Marriage File:" from the menu. You'll see the Update
Marriage Requester.
Simply hit RETURN to enter the '0' you see in the string gadget, and you'll
see a Marriage entry screen. We'll begin by entering the parent's marriage.
* Place the cursor in the Husband's Record # field. Press right-Amiga x to
clear the field. Enter the record number of Harold Burnett Smith (should
be #3). You should now see Harold Smith's name appear on the line below.
* Press right-Amiga x to clear the Wife's Record # field, and enter the
record number of Sarah Jean Mayfield (should be #4). You should now see
Sarah Mayfield's name appear on the line below.
* Place the cursor in the Marriage date field and enter the following data:
Marriage date field: "15 Jun 1938"
Marriage city field: "Norfolk"
Marriage state field: "VA"
Marriage country field: "USA"
* We are finished entering this Marriage. Click on the SAVE gadget.
* We have one more marriage to enter. Click on the NEXT gadget. You'll get a
requester that says:
"Record does not exist. Want 1st blank record?"
* Since we have only entered one marriage record, there is no record #2.
Click on OK to get the 1st blank record. Make sure the cursor is in the
Husband's Record # field.
* Press right-Amiga x to clear the field, and enter the record number of
Harold Edward Smythe (should be #5). You should now see Harold Smythe's
name appear on the line below.
* Press right-Amiga x to clear the Wife's Record # field. Enter the record
number of Margaret Reade Elston (should be #6). You should now see
Margaret Elston's name appear on the line below.
* Place the cursor in the Marriage date field and enter "26 Sep 1902".
* We are finished entering this Marriage. Click on the SAVE gadget.
* Click on the QUIT gadget to exit the Update Marriage screen.
Many functions in Origins rely on having Parent/Child and Marriage Indexes
available. We are now going to create those indexes.
* Select "CREATE/Parent/Child Index:" from the menu.
* When the disk activity stops, select "CREATE/Marriages Index:" from the
menu.
This concludes our tutorial. You may now experiment with various Origins
functions. We suggest that you might want to try "DISPLAY/Pedigree:" next,
using the son as the root of the pedigree to begin.
Please remember that Persons must already be described in order to enter
Ordinance or Marriage information. The Person data base is the only one
where you may describe the attributes of a person.
Always remember to update the appropriate index when generating lists that
require an index.
